There are multiple phytoplankton stations and 15 of them are maintained by 2016, although the data set also contains data of several discontinued stations. Each phytoplankton station is visited 1 to 4 times per month over a period of 25 years for some of the stations (two times per month is the norm). Samples are analyzed to estimate phytoplankton composition and abundance.
