attribute NC_GLOBAL EngDescr String Network Monitoring phytoplankton REPHY was created by Ifremer in 1984, following the observation of many poisonings (diarrhea) of shellfish consumers in 1983 and 1984, on the coast of Brittany. These poisonings were caused by the development of Dinophysis in the coastal environment which produce toxins that cause diarrhea.

The REPHY is a nationwide network of twelve coastal laboratories that share the French coast. It aims to:
observe all phytoplankton species in coastal waters, and identify events such as colored waters, exceptional blooms and algal species toxic or harmful to marine life, monitoring of particular species that produce toxins harmful to consumers of shellfish.
These objectives are complementary, since regular monitoring of all phytoplankton species allows the detection of toxic species known pest, but also potentially toxic species. It is the presence of these toxic species in water that triggers monitoring of toxins in shellfish.

Le REPHY est un réseau national dont la couverture est assurée par douze laboratoires côtiers qui se partagent le littoral français. Il a pour objectifs :


d'observer l'ensemble des espèces phytoplanctoniques des eaux côtières, et recenser les événements tels que les eaux colorées, les efflorescences exceptionnelles et les proliférations d'espèces toxiques ou nuisibles pour la faune marine,

de surveiller plus particulièrement les espèces produisant des toxines dangereuses pour les consommateurs de coquillages.

Ces objectifs sont complémentaires, puisque la surveillance régulière de l’ensemble des espèces phytoplanctoniques permet la détection des espèces toxiques et nuisibles connues, mais également d'espèces potentiellement toxiques. C'est la présence de ces espèces toxiques dans l'eau qui déclenche la surveillance des toxines dans les coquillages.
